Today we read and answered questions from a background essay on abolition.  Social studies is working in conjunction with ELA on this assignment.

Today we read a poem and a speech about slavery and civil/women's rights.  Students answered questions and we discussed as a class.

Students received their semester exam study guide and began filling it in.  We also reviewed for the test using various online formats.

Week 14 Nov 30 - Dec 4

Monday Nov 30

After today's warm up (a discussion of what we did over the break), students completed a scaled down version of a choice board.  Students chose and completed any two assignments.

Tuesday Dec 1

Students worked in TEAMS and are creating a PowerPoint to describe key events that led to the Civil War.  Today students worked on part one (of three) of this project.  This will be the summative assessment (test grade) for the Civil War in Georgia.  

Homework: Complete part 1 of the ppt if not completed in class.  

Wednesday Dec 2

Students continued working in TEAMS and creating a PowerPoint to describe key events of the Civil War.  Today students worked on part two (of three) of this project.  This will be the summative assessment (test grade) for the Civil War in Georgia.

Thursday Dec 3

Students worked in groups to solve different puzzles relating to the Civil War.  This 'escape room' activity enhances student knowledge of key events of the Civil War

Homework: Complete the ppt if not already completed.  All three parts of the project are due by the end of the period tomorrow.  

Friday Dec 4

Students worked on the third part of their Civil War in Georgia assessment.  Students worked in TEAMS and completed a writing assignment.  This assignment counts as 40% of the assessment grade.

Week 13 Nov 16 - Nov 20

Students researched 3 key events of the Civil War: The Georgia Secession Convention, Advantages of the North/South, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Students accessed the documents in TEAMS.  Students completed an advanced organizer in class.

Tuesday November 17

Students continued to research events/battles of the Civil War in Georgia.  Students completed a web quest about key events in Ga.  The assignment can be found in TEAMS.

Wednesday Nov 18

Today we learned more about Andersonville Prison.  Students took notes on a guided note sheet.  We also viewed a short video about Andersonville.

Week 12 Nov 9 - Nov 13

Monday Nov 9

Today we started a new unit of study.  We are learning about the events leading up to the Civil War.  After a journal entry warm up, students recorded notes and answered questions while watching a video about slavery and the Civil War.  Here is the KEY.  Lastly, we read about 2 abolitionists.  Students created a Venn diagram comparing/contrasting them.

The unit test is set for Friday Dec 4th.

Homework: Complete the Venn diagram if not completed in class.  

Tuesday Nov 10

After the warm up, students executed a "Scavenger Hunt" of the Compromise of 1850.  Students filled in an advanced organizer with information found on their TEAMS page.  

Homework: Complete the scavenger hunt if not completed in class.   

Wednesday Nov 11

All classes had a mini lesson on Dred Scott followed by a reading comprehension.  2nd - 4th periods had a reading comprehension activity about Nullification and States Rights

Thursday Nov 12

1st period - students utilized TEAMS to create a mini-project.  2nd thru 4th periods - students put Irene Emerson on trial for false imprisonment of Dred Scott.  This mock court case is based on the real court case of Dred Scott, a former slave suing for freedom.

Homework - 1st period - finish the mini-project if not completed in class.  

Friday Nov 13

1st period students performed the mock trial of Irene Emerson.  2nd - 4th period students learned about the importance of the Election of 1860. After the warm up, students completed a reading comprehension activity.  Afterwards, students wrote 2 newspaper articles about the election.  

Homework: complete the newspaper activity if not completed in class.

Today we learned about the removal of the Cherokee from Ga. First, we started with a reading and timeline activity about Creek removal. Next, students had part one of a lesson on the removal of the Cherokee. Students recorded notes on a guided note sheet

Today we resumed our lesson on removal of the Cherokee. Afterwards, students completed an interactive notebook activity about the key people and key events of Indian Removal from Georgia.

Today we analyzed poetry about the removal of the Indians from the southeast. If students didn't complete their poetry assignment (Haiku) in class, it should be completed for homework.

Students learned about the impact of the cotton gin and railroad in Georgia.  Student's took notes on a guided note sheet.

Today's warm up was a comprehension check over the materials we have learned about over the last few days.  Students also created a magazine advertisement and article to demonstrate knowledge of the technological innovations of the time period (Cotton Gin/Railroad).

Wednesday Oct 28

Today we learned about the Creek Indians in Georgia and their removal.  Students took notes on a guided note sheet.  Afterwards, students received and filled out a study guide for the quiz Friday.

Thursday Oct 29

We continued our discussion of the Creek removal with a lesson on perspectives.  Students read portions of the Treaty of York and put wrote out their reactions as if they were different people (perspectives).  Students then received a paper that made them a prosecutor or a defender of William McIntosh.  Students then drafted an opening argument/statement to persuade a jury/judge.

After today's warm up (catching up with what students did on Fall Break), students logged into TEAMS and completed a research assignment on the Establishment of UGA.

Today we discussed the 5 different capitals of Georgia and the reason for the moves.  Students recorded notes on a guided note sheet.  Afterwards, students executed a read aloud review of the Establishment of UGA and the Georgia Capitals.

Wednesday Oct 21

Students completed an assignment in TEAMS.  Students enriched their knowledge of the 5 GA capitals.

Today we started Unit 4 The Revolutionary Period.  Students took notes on a guided note sheet to this lesson: The Revolutionary Era 1

Tuesday Sep 29

After a quick lesson, students engaged in a STEM activity.  Students read and discussed the failure of Fort Necessity.  Students were tasked with building a fort of their own (out of straws and tape) that would support a water bottle.  Many were successful, many were not :)

Wednesday Sep 30

Today we discussed the parts of the Declaration of Independence and the Ga signers of the DOI.  Students recorded notes on a guided note sheet.  

Homework: Break up letter.  Students write at least 5 sentences in their 'break up' letter to King George III. This is due Friday Oct 2.

Today's warm up was a comprehension check/study guide.  We had a mini-lesson on the Boston Massacre.  This is to help prepare students for the DAR essay contest that is coming soon.  We will continue research tomorrow and start a rough draft.

Today's lesson was about Georgia as a Royal Colony.  Students recorded notes onto a guided note sheet.  Students also received an "optional" assignment.  This assignment is in TEAMS and is due Thursday.  Students may replace a "bad" daily grade by doing well on this assignment.

Today we started a new unit, Colonization of Georgia. The assessment will be on Friday Sep 25th.  Due to MAP testing, class periods are shorter than normal.  Students recorded notes onto a guided note sheet to this lesson: Creating a Settlement 1.  

Homework: None.  Get a good night's rest and a great breakfast in preparation for the last day of MAP tests tomorrow.

Today we completed the Colonial Georgia notes with a lesson on Mary Musgrove and Tomochichi.

Today we started Unit 2, Native American Cultures and European Exploration.  Today we focused on Native American Cultures by doing research on 4 Native American Groups: Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, & Mississippian.  Students filled in a graphic organizer on each group.  

There will be a Unit 2 Quiz Friday Sep 4th.  

Homework: Complete today's chart if not completed in class.   

Tuesday Sep 1

Today we studied European Exploration.  Students took notes on a guided note sheet to this lesson: European Exploration.  We also recorded facts from a video about Hernando DeSoto's Exploration.

Wednesday Sep 2

Students completed and submitted an assignment via TEAMS.  Students researched and summarized different aspects of de Soto's life and accomplishments.

Thursday Sep 3

Students worked on an assignment via TEAMS again today.  Students typed 2 paragraphs to persuade me that Hernando deSoto was a villain or a hero.

Today we discussed the characteristics and economic contributions of the 5 regions.  Students took notes on a guided note sheet to the following lesson: Geography of GA.

Tuesday Aug 25

After the warm up, students were introduced to a GA Region performance task.  We used class time today for research and to allow for questions.  Students will also have class time tomorrow to continue working on the booklet.

Today we talked about crazy laws that exist in the State if Georgia.  Afterwards, I distributed and we discussed the syllabus for Ga Studies.  Students have a portion that needs to be signed and returned to me.

Tuesday Aug 18

Today we reviewed the connecting themes of social studies.  Students recorded notes into their notebook.  We will use these notes tomorrow as students create a product that will demonstrate their knowledge of these themes.  

Students start most classes with a warm up.  To receive full credit on warm ups, students must record the date, learning target, prompt and their answer to the prompt.  Students will keep warm ups together on one sheet of paper and turn in when asked for.  Warm ups count as a daily grade.
